Using an LSA for Physical Wellness Retreats

Multi-day fitness and wellness retreats, and how employers usually cap the travel and lodging parts.

A physical wellness retreat packs several days of movement into one trip: morning yoga, guided hikes, strength sessions and nutrition talks, with real rest in between. Employers add retreats to an LSA for employees who want a concentrated reset rather than another monthly membership, and because a retreat is one of the few wellness purchases people rarely justify spending on themselves.

What parts of a wellness retreat can an LSA cover?

Retreat pricing usually bundles several things together, so plans often spell out which pieces count. Commonly included items are:

  • Program fees for a multi-day yoga or fitness retreat
  • Guided hiking, trail running or outdoor fitness retreats
  • Boot camp style getaways with daily training sessions
  • Lodging when it's bundled into the retreat package price
  • On-site movement, breathwork and nutrition workshops
  • Local day retreats without an overnight stay

This category is one of many; our overview of LSA eligible expenses covers the rest.

How to structure a retreat category

Decide how to handle bundled pricing

Many retreats quote one price for lodging, meals and programming. Decide up front whether the whole package counts, or ask for an itemized invoice so only the program portion is reimbursed.

Write a short definition of a retreat

Something like an organized program with scheduled fitness sessions led by instructors gives reviewers a clear test. It also separates a retreat from a leisure trip.

Plan around allowance size

A single retreat can use most of an annual allowance. Some employers let employees combine categories so a retreat stays within reach without raising the overall budget.

Retreat costs that plans often split out or exclude

  • Airfare and ground transportation to the retreat are frequently excluded, or moved to a separate travel category where one exists.
  • Standalone spa treatments, alcohol and room upgrades billed apart from the program are usually not covered.
  • Detox or cleanse programs involving supplements, supervised fasting or medical claims may be excluded or reviewed one at a time.
  • A resort vacation that happens to include a gym generally doesn't count as a retreat.
  • Because retreats can be expensive, employees can often apply only part of the cost, up to the plan's annual limit.

Who books a wellness retreat with LSA funds

Retreats tend to appeal to employees who have hit a plateau with their usual routine or want a structured break after a hard stretch at work. Some use them to try a new discipline, like trail hiking or yoga, with instructors on hand all day. Others are coming off a long season of caregiving or work travel and want a few days where meals, movement and sleep are planned for them. Remote workers sometimes book one simply to be active around other people. It also fits naturally alongside wellness stipends.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my LSA for a wellness retreat?

Many employers allow it, particularly for fitness, yoga and outdoor retreats with a scheduled program. The plan sets which retreats qualify and whether lodging or travel is part of it.

Will my LSA pay for flights to a retreat?

Often not. Plans tend to leave travel out of a retreat category, though some have a separate leisure or travel category that might apply, so check how yours treats transportation before booking.

Does a spa weekend count as a physical wellness retreat?

It depends on what's included. A weekend built around scheduled fitness classes and guided activity is more likely to qualify than one centered on massages and pool time, and some plans put spa services in a separate self-care category.

Can a group of coworkers each use LSA funds for the same retreat?

Usually, if the retreat meets the plan's rules, each person can use their own balance. A company-organized offsite is different and is typically paid from a team or events budget.

Because LSAs are post-tax benefits, reimbursements are usually taxable. Read more on how LSA reimbursements are taxed.
